Boxtorow/BCSP HBCU Football Power Rankings

Jackson State jumps to No. 1 in BCF-BCS Standings

With Bethune-Cookman’s loss to unranked Norfolk State, Jackson State is No. 1 in the BCF-BCS standings.  Despite falling from the top spot to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively in the BCSP and Boxtorow polls, B-CU is No. 2 .09 points behind the Tigers.

Despite rising slightly in the human polls, South Carolina State barely got by Florida A&M and fell in the computer polls from last week dropping them to No. 3.  Tennessee State has the highest computer ranking, even higher than B-CU who it lost to the first game of the season, but remained No. 4.  Winston-Salem State rose to No. 1 in the BCSP and Boxtorow polls, but the Rams computer ranking was too high and they remain No. 5.

Southern’s win over Alabama State moved them into the Hornets former spot No. 6.  The Hornets dropped to No. 8.

Delaware State debuts at No. 9 with a strong strength of schedule. Tuskegee and Prairie View A&M both suffered losses and drop out of the poll.

Much like the BCS, the poll uses a pair of major HBCU weekly polls – the BCSP rankings and the Boxtorow media poll – and three computer polls. Two of the computer polls, Massey Ratings and Peter Wolfe Ratings, are used in the actual BCS rankings.

The formula is such that the mean of the rankings of each school in the computer poll is added with the two “human” polls and divided by 3 to get the “BCF-BCS” top 10 power rankings.  The human polls count 67 percent towards the outcome and the computer polls count 33 percent.
