Media, Coaches vote Bethune-Cookman champions in HBCU polls

Fuquay-Varina, NC/New York - Bethune-Cookman was voted Boxtorow.com/BASN HBCU football national champions in the final top 10 media and coaches polls.  The Wildcats received 10 of 20 first place votes in the media poll and received 14 of 15 first place votes in the coaches poll.

In the media poll the Albany State Golden Rams, who completed an undefeated regular season, had a first round bye in the NCAA Division II Playoffs, and defeated Wingate in the second round of the playoffs, finished second.  Nos. 3 - 5 were separated by one point as SWAC Champion Texas Southern, who defeated Alabama State 11-6 in the SWAC Championship Game on Saturday, finished third.  The Tigers also received two first-place votes.  South Carolina State, who was No.1 the majority of the year, finished fourth while Grambling, who also received two first-place votes, finished fifth.

Florida A&M who shared the MEAC title with Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State finished sixth.  Tuskegee, Jackson State, Morehouse and Alabama State rounded out the top 10.

In the coaches poll, Texas Southern finished second and received one first-place vote.  Nos. 3 - 5 weren't as close, as South Carolina State finished third with 113 points, followed by Grambling State at No. 4 with 100 points and No. 5 Florida A&M with 85 points.  Jackson State finished sixth followed by SWAC Eastern Division champion Alabama State at No.7, Prairie View A&M at No. 8, Hampton at No.9 and Norfolk State at No. 10.

The last HBCU football game of the season is the Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl, which pits the top 100 draft-eligible seniors in an all-star atmosphere displaying their talents in front of scouts.  The game, with its East-West style format, will take place Saturday, December 18 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.  The game will be broadcast nationally on Classics Sports Radio Network and online at www.classicsportsradio.com.

The Boxtorow.com/BASN All-American Poll will be released on Wednesday, December 15.
