Boxtorow.com Top 10 National HBCU Division II/NAIA Basketball Poll


Hampton, Shaw unanimous in final polls

Fuquay-Varina, NC - Hampton and Shaw received all of the first place votes in the final Boxtorow.com Division I and Division II/NAIA HBCU Basketball polls.

Hampton won the MEAC Tournament championship and made a second round appearance against Duke in the Division I NCAA Tournament.  MEAC regular season champion Bethune-Cookman finished #2 in the final poll.  The Wildcats also made a post season appearance against Virginia Tech in the first round of the NIT.

Morgan State, who fell to Hampton in the MEAC Tournament championship game, finished #3.  SWAC regular season champion Texas Southern, who also made a post season appearance in the first round of the NIT against Colorado finished #4, while SWAC Tournament champion Alabama State, who won its second tournament championship in three years, finished #5.  The Hornets opened the first round of the Division I NCAA Tournament with a loss to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

In the Division II/NAIA top 10 poll, Shaw finished first in the final poll after winning the CIAA Tournament championship and a first round game against Winston-Salem State in the Atlantic Regional of the NCAA Division II tournament before falling to West Liberty in the second round.    

Bowie State finished #2 and also won a first round game in the Atlantic Regional.  Gulf Coast Atlantic Conference champion Tougaloo, who won a first round game in the NAIA national tournament finished #3 followed by Xavier (La.) who also competed in the NAIA national tournament and finished #4.  Stillman rounds out the top 5. 

Winston-Salem State was #6, followed by SIAC conference tournament champion Clark-Atlanta who was tied for #7 with fellow conference member Benedict.  West Virginia State was #9 and Cheyney State rounds out at #10.
